In chapel today, I was really encouraged by the pastor's teaching. He memorizes whole books of the Bible and speak it to audiences. He memorized 2 Timothy yesterday and spoke it in normal speaking way and I was "wow-ed" by it cos when he was saying it, I thought to myself, are these really in the Bible? cos it just comes out to me in a totally new way(although it's the exact same words as those in the Bible). so he encouraged us to internalize Scriptures so God's Word is hidden in our heart always and we will live by the Word.
This is what he shared today...
Problem a lot of people face in reading the Bible:
- Being consistent: We always find some sort of excuses to not read the Bible. Most of us come to the Bible everyday with the mindset of "ok, God, what information do I need to absorb today? what is the lesson?" and if we read the Bible and don't find anything that seems to "teach" us something, we think we're not really reading the Bible..at least i feel that..and i get discouraged.. but Bible reading is building a relationship with God. the amazing thing about the Bible is that it is the only book written with the purpose of bringing the readers to a relationship with the Author. It's ok to just read the Bible and just enjoy reading it once in a while. For example, parents don't just teach and correct their children; they also spend time just to have fun with their children. It's the same with our relationship with God.
- Our mind wanders away while reading. ->Satan's "defense strategy", just like the the goal-keeper in a sports game is preventing you from charging to the goal. (do u find "Mr. Monotone" reading your Bible for you? you read the Bible through with the same tone and no wonder that bores you. the Bible is living and true, not some boring book.) ->therefore, we need a strategy:
1. Prayerful reading-pray for understanding and if you find your mind wandering off, pray to God instead of just reading through without really reading.
2. Continuous reading. -Set aside a chunk of time and read as much as you can, e.g. read the whole book of the shorter books in the Bible instead of 1 chapter a day. You wouldn't sit down and read a page of a novel each day, right? so why would you do that with Bible reading? If you let Satan convince you that any novelists are better authors than God, then it's a huge win for Satan, isn't it? Reading out loud is a good strategy too.
3. Repetitious reading-read the passages over and over again. It's because repetition is the key to learning. E.g. read Titus(or other shorter books in the Bible) every day for 30 days. By the end of the 30-day period, you'll remember chunks of the passage without even trying to memorize. Repetition is the way to make you remember.
4. Independent reading-read the Bible without using commentaries or jumping to every footnote in your study Bible for the first few times because reading the Bible is communicating with God, not the commentators or other people although the notes are helpful. but first, just read the Bible .
5. Thoughtful reading

I just wanted to let you know how much God just used you to encourage me to persist. I have been slack in my reading, and so my prayer life has also gone dry. I have really been trying to get back into it, so for "inspiration" on helpful ways of reading, i came across this post, and it has really encouraged me to go for it. Please pray for me to continue to pursue God as total King of my life. Praise God for loving us so much that he pursued us first!
